The Happening: Nickel Mines School Tradegy

The Happening presents the events of a shooting and suicide in the usually p51+QNxaKAJL__SY344_BO1,204,203,200_eaceful and private Amish community. Despite this horrific event, this book shows how the most moral thing that can be done in the face of evil, is to forgive.

This amazing account represents a community’s strengths and how their beliefs and faith in God got them through a grief-stricken time, when most would have fallen and crumbled under the devastation of losing a child.

Room

ROOM-II.jpg“Everybody’s damaged by something.”

Room could easily be categorized as an action however, it also poses numerous philosophical questions.

Jack, a five-year-old boy, is born and raised in a garden shed with his young mother, who was kidnapped years before. Completely oblivious to the world  outside the room, Jack’s life is turned upside down when he is required to learn about  something completely foreign and unimaginable for such a young lad in order to save both of their lives.

This gripping work of fiction created questions about our own existence and knowledge of the world: ‘Is this everything or is there more to our lives that we don’t know about?’

Beautiful

“Even when you think things can never move forward and you feel so low, there’s always a way out.”

For me, this quote beautifully sums up Katie Piper. At the young a515DfqLwgtL__SY344_BO1,204,203,200_.jpgge of 24-years-old Katie, an aspiring model and t.v. presenter, became a victim of physical and sexual abuse when her boyfriend, Danny Lynch beat and raped her and later, had someone throw sulfuric acid over her. Despite this, Katie’s strong will meant that she wouldn’t remain a victim for long, with her soon becoming a survivor. Her story is an inspiration to many as she shows that, however difficult it may seem, it is possible to pull through the toughest of times.

This amazing woman, even when fighting her own inner demons, channeled her negative experiences into building her own charity for victims of abuse, enabling others to see a glimmer of hope when all seems lost.

Beautiful Ever After

“Things will never get better if you believe they won’t”

Katie, once again, defied all odds. She achieved the impossible and, along 51tVoN-TABL__SL300_with her ever growing and successful charity, Katie found the love of her life and started her own family. This achievement of course, was accompanied with additional worries and fears for her: “A son might not be attacked, have acid thrown in his face… But a daughter might.”

Despite all of these, Katie still managed to pull through and became, once again, an inspiration to not only those with physical and mental health issues but also to first time parents.

Anne Frank Remembered

“But even an ordinary secretary or a housewife or a teenager can, within their own small ways, turn on a small light in a dark room.” annefrankr.jpg

The harrowing story of Anne Frank and her family is known worldwide however this book offers the perspective of the heroic Miep Gies, who hid the Frank family and her friends in war-torn Amsterdam. In doing so, she risked her own life and freedom.

The completely selfless acts of not only Gies, but of many others, restores our faith in society and shows us that even in the most evil of times, there is still hope.

The Freedom Writer’s Diary.

Freedomdiarybookcover“Freedom writers have a dream.”

This book, with its 151 narrators, is extremely eye-opening. The heavy focus is on minority groups in society but also the idea of needing to ‘fit-in’ to a certain group. This makes this book incredibly easy to relate to for all readers. The pressure of society are heavily felt by the youngsters in the novel and, although they believe their voices are insignificant and nobody would want to listen, they feel determined to break stereotypes and open the eyes of society, making their everyday struggles publicly known.

This is a truly magnificent work of art which shows that no matter how small and unworthy you think you are, if you speak out, you can change the world.
